💡 Quran and Cosmology: A Linguistic and Scientific Analysis

This article presents a profound and detailed analysis of the cosmos, connecting contemporary cosmological concepts with deep linguistic insights from the Arabic text of the Holy Quran.

1. The Superior Complexity of Cosmic Creation

While modern science has documented the intricate structure of human beings, our knowledge of the universe remains relatively limited. Yet, Allah Almighty informs us that the construction of the Heavens (the Universe) is inherently more complex than the creation of humanity:

Holy Quran: (Sūrat l-Nāziʿāt) Verse (79:27): “أَأَنْتُمْ أَشَدُّ خَلْقًا أَمِ السَّمَاءُ بَنَاهَا”

Sahih International: Are you a more difficult creation or is the heaven? Allah constructed it.

The structure and construction of the Heaven are described as a miracle in their own right:

  • (Sūrat Qāf) Verse (50:6): “…how We structured it and adorned it and [how] it has no rifts?”
  • (Sūrat l-Dhāriyāt) Verse (51:47): “…We constructed with strength, and indeed, We are [its] expander (لَمُوسِعُونَ).”

2. The Origins of the Cosmos: Rataq and Fataq

The initial state of the universe is described by the Quran as a unified entity:

Holy Quran: (Sūrat l-Anbiyāa) Verse (21:30): “أَوَلَمۡ يَرَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوٓاْ أَنَّ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٲتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ ڪَانَتَا رَتۡقً۬ا فَفَتَقۡنَـٰهُمَا‌ۖ “

Sahih International: Have those who disbelieved not considered that the heavens and the earth were a joined entity, and We separated them.

(Ratq): Joined – things are held together in such a way that there is no space between them (Taj Al-ʿArus).
(Fataq): Separated – the act of creating space between things (Ibn Faris).

The Quran asserts that the entire known universe (ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٲتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ) existed in a single, compressed state before being dynamically separated to form its current vast structure – a precise parallel to the singularity and subsequent expansion of the Big Bang.

The Shared Origin of Dark Matter and Light

(Sūrat l-Anʿām) Verse (6:1): ٱلۡحَمۡدُ لِلَّهِ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٲتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ وَجَعَلَ ٱلظُّلُمَـٰتِ وَٱلنُّورَ‌ۖ…

Sahih International: [All] praise is [due] to Allah, who created the heavens and the earth and made the darkness and the light.

The distinction between the two verbs is critically important:

  • خَلَقَ (khalaqa): Used for the initial, fundamental creation from nothing (Heavens and Earth).
  • جَعَلَ (ja‘ala): Used for making, assigning, or transforming darkness (ٱلظُّلُمَـٰتِ), which may cosmologically correspond to non-luminous matter like dark matter, and light (ٱلنُّورَ).

The grammatical parallelism suggests that both darkness and light were made or fashioned after the initial creation of the cosmic substance. This implies that dark matter is not of an unknown, separate origin, but shares the same precursor material as light, having been derived or transformed from the primordial substance created by Allah, reinforcing the concept of a unified creation.

The Nebulous or Opaque Phase (Dukhān)

(Sūrat Fuṣṣilat) Verse (41:10): “…ٱسۡتَوَىٰٓ إِلَى ٱلسَّمَآءِ وَهِىَ دُخَانٌ۬ “

Sahih International: Then He directed Himself to the heaven while it was smoke

(Dukhān) can refer both to the opaque plasma era (Photon Epoch, up to 370,000 years), where the universe was non-transparent like a “fog” because photons scattered off free electrons, and to the later primordial gas clouds from which the first stars and galaxies formed.

3. Cosmic Time Cycles: The Six Days (Sittat Ayyām)

The Quran refers to the creation of the heavens and the earth in six days

(Sūrat Hūd) Verse (11:7): “And it is He who created the heavens and the earth in six days

Interpreting these “days” (ayyām) as vast cosmic eras, the total age of the universe (approx 13.8 billion years) can be divided: frac13.8 { billion years}{6 days} 2.3 { billion years per day/era.}

The detailed sequence in Sūrat Fuṣṣilat (41:9-12) outlines a structured development:

Creation PhaseVerse (41:9-12)Time (Era)Cosmological Implication
Earth (Basic Structure)“خَلَقَ ٱلۡأَرۡضَ فِى يَوۡمَيۡنِapprox 4.6 billion yearsThe initial formation and shaping of the Earth.
Heaven (Structuring)فَقَضَٮٰهُنَّ سَبۡعَ سَمَـٰوَاتٍ۬ فِى يَوۡمَيۡنِapprox 4.6 billion yearsThe rapid structural formation of the universe (galaxies, filaments) during the early and intermediate eras (from 370,000 years up to approx 5 billion years).
Resources/Sustenanceأَقۡوَٲتَہَا فِىٓ أَرۡبَعَةِ أَيَّامٍ۬approx 9.2 billion yearsThis refers to establishing the capacity and provisions for life on Earth. This period encompasses the 2 days of initial formation plus 2 additional days (4 days total). Notably, the estimated approx 4.6 billion years (2 days) remaining for the Earth’s habitability aligns closely with the time before the Sun enters its red giant phase (Solar Evolution).

4. The Structure of the Seven Heavens

The concept of “Seven Heavens” (سَبۡعَ سَمَـٰوَاتٍ۬) should not be limited to the ancient Greek notion of concentric layers. It indicates structural groupings:

  • Grouping by Laws: The heavens are described as طِبَاقً۬ا (ṭibāqan) – arranged in accordance with or according to rule. This interpretation is strongly supported by the phrase وَأَوۡحَىٰ فِى كُلِّ سَمَآءٍ أَمۡرَهَا‌ۚ (“and inspired in each heaven its command”). Thus, the seven heavens are classified based on the unique cosmological laws or governing principles that operate within each structural division (potentially large-scale structures).
  • Evolutionary Shaping: فَسَوَّٮٰهُنَّ (fasawwāhunna, “fashioned them, evolved them,” 2:29) suggests that these seven structures were ordered and shaped after the basic cosmic material (stars and galaxies) had been created, aligning with the scientific sequence of initial formation followed by the assembly of large-scale structures.

The Visible Heaven

Sahih International: And We adorned the nearest heaven with lamps…

The singular term ٱلسَّمَآءَ ٱلدُّنۡيَا (“the sky of the world” or “nearest heaven”) is used for the visible sky, which is adorned with “lamps” (بِمَصَـٰبِيحَ). This reflects the scientific reality that the overwhelming majority of stars visible to the naked eye belong to our own galaxy (the nearest heaven).

5. The Dynamic Universe: Pathways and Boundaries

Spacetime as a Curved Structure

The Quran describes the heaven as something that returns and contains paths:

  • (Sūrat l-Ṭāriq) Verse (86:11): “وَٱلسَّمَآءِ ذَاتِ ٱلرَّجۡعِ” (By the sky which returns) – The particle ذَاتِ (“itself”) is key, emphasizing that the heaven itself possesses the capacity to return or recycle (e.g., in cycles or curvature).
(By the heaven containing pathways) – ٱلۡحُبُكِ refers to curved, twisted pathways (like wavy hair or ripples of sand).

The use of ذَاتِ is a crucial linguistic observation: it implies that these paths/curvatures are not separate features, but the essential nature of the heaven itself – a concept consistent with the warping and dynamics of spacetime in General Relativity.

The Knocking Signal (al-Ṭāriq)

(Sūrat l-Ṭāriq) Verse (86:1): “…وَالطَّارِقِ”

Sahih International: …and the night comer

الطَّارِقِ (al-Ṭāriq) literally means “the one that knocks” or “the night visitor.” In a cosmic context, this suggests celestial objects that emit rhythmic signals:

  1. Pulsating Stars / Pulsars: They send out periodic, rapid electromagnetic pulses which resemble a “knocking” pattern.
  2. Magnetars: Neutron stars with extreme magnetic fields, whose sudden shifts cause bursts of energy and vibrations.

Traversing Cosmic Boundaries

(Sūrat l-Raḥmān) Verse (55:33): “…إِنِ ٱسۡتَطَعۡتُمۡ أَن تَنفُذُواْ مِنۡ أَقۡطَارِ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٲتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ فَٱنفُذُواْ‌ۚ لَا تَنفُذُونَ إِلَّا بِسُلۡطَـٰنٍ۬”

Sahih International: …if you are able to pass beyond the regions (أَقۡطَارِ) of the heavens and the earth, then pass. You will not pass except by authority [from Allah].

This verse indicates that the universe (the heavens) has boundaries or regions (أَقۡطَارِ). To traverse these limits requires overwhelming authority or power (سُلۡطَـٰنٍ۬), reflecting the immense energy and technological advancement needed to overcome the vast distances and physical constraints (like the expansion of the universe) to reach its far regions.

6. Universal Justice and the Mechanism of Evolution

The Quran establishes a system of cause and effect based on effort and recompense that can be applied universally:

(Sūrat l-Jāthiyah) Verse (45:22):  “وَخَلَقَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٲتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ بِٱلۡحَقِّ وَلِتُجۡزَىٰ كُلُّ نَفۡسِۭ بِمَا ڪَسَبَتۡ وَهُمۡ لَا يُظۡلَمُونَ “

Sahih International: …and so that every soul may be recompensed for what it has earned, and they will not be wronged.

This verse implies that the structure of the heavens and the earth (ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٲتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ) is a mechanism designed to uphold this truth. Evolution is interpreted not as a random process, but as the result of perpetual struggle or striving (سَعَىٰ) by organisms. The cosmic environment acts as a template (بِٱلۡحَقِّ) that rewards every effort (ڪَسَبَتۡ) with a corresponding recompense (لِتُجۡزَىٰ) in the form of subtle changes, eventually leading to permanent, inheritable variations and the process of evolution.

7. Conclusion

The Quran presents a coherent and profound cosmology that resonates with many modern scientific discoveries: from the singularity of the Big Bang (Rataq/Fataq) and the expansion of spacetime (lamūsiʿūn, dhāt al-ḥubuk) to the existence of life in other worlds (al-ʿālamīn).

We will show them Our signs in the horizons and within themselves until it becomes clear to them that it is the truth.

Every scientific advancement serves to increase the clarity and understanding (يَتَبَيَّنَ) of the truths already embedded within the Divine Revelation.
